Operating Principles

Our primary goal is to stop the cycle of trans-generational trauma and grief and alleviate much of the psycho-social problems affecting the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their families. [Commitment to Social Justice]

Gallang Place staff ensure a safe and private environment for clients to work through issues affecting their lives and find appropriate solutions for clients so that they are better able to lead healthier and more productive lives. [Confidentiality and Privacy]

Gallang Place provides supervision and training opportunities, where possible, for staff to further develop their skills and knowledge to enhance the quality of service delivery. [Competence and Professional Development]

Counselling empowers clients to become more aware of their own choices; psychological, emotional and behavioural patterns and how this impacts on their lives and life-choices. Counselling enhances the client’s resourcefulness and ability to make better choices. It allows clients to begin to heal traumas and grief and better manage stresses and life’s challenges. [Client Self-Determination]

Gallang Place was unique in that it was the first stand-alone Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community based organisation in Queensland, offering counselling services by qualified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. [Resource, Equity and Access]

We are committed to providing training and professional development to staff to maintain a high standard of ethics and service delivery to our clients. [Integrity of Profession and Service]
